Do u know what would happen to the earth when asteroids strike ?

I was watching the daily planet in discovery channel, when i heard that asteroids generally strike once in 5000 years, and moment it strikes, it would also fall in the ocean resulting in huge waves of tsunami with 5 metre tall waves which can damage most part of the earth, since earth is covered by 2/3 of water, and this results in disaster which is horrifying, hope this information was useful to u.
