Why are people so obsessed with celebrities?

There is a girl at college, and every time I see her, she is reading 'heat' or some magazine about celebrities. I just dont understand why she, and countless others care so much about celbriteis, who they have never even met (normally). There are always people who seem to know every actors name, in every film and every little bit of gossip. But Why do they care? Do you care?
