first u say to yourself that u can do it very nicely then start. * just dip the tip of the brush in water and then take small quantity of the colour and start colouring. * don't take too much of water with brush * always keep a cloth with you while painting.if excess water spreading on the sheet then use cloth. * clean the brush thorouly after each use other wise all the colours mixes and the proper colour wouldn't come * "practise makes perfect" so ........... do more practise you will definitely paint well.

I use to do oil painting, but it requires such an elaborate set up, that I decide to try water colors. I tried the same techniques and of course all I got was a mess! I finally decided to "cheat". I found a photo that I thought would be a beautiful painting in the hands of someone who knew how to paint. Then I traced it onto tracing paper. Then I swallowed my pride, took my tracing to an art supply store and asked the clerk what I needed to put this drawing onto paper with water colors. She showed me which papers did what, which brushes did what and which paints did what. Then I went online to a tutorial and practiced a lot before I finally was satisfied with the results. Be patient! Some people may be able to watercolor freehand, but I need a pretty elaborate drawing to get me started. Have fun!

yes this advice is very good. I tried it once for the fun of it and did one really good painting. Everyone said Wow did u do that? Said it was real good and didn't know I could paint. That made me feel pretty good. Then next picture was not so good, and next one not good and Ijust couldn't get it. My son is in his 3rd year art in school and he gave me some tips. Its all about shadow. And if you don't have the right tools to work with the paint is not going to flow the way you want it. I looked at alot of pictures online and tried to see how others looked. your painting looks good, keep at it.

And sometimes choosing the right kind of water colour I mean a brand like prang, reeves to name a few. If you really love to paint I think you have to invest in the right kind of water colour and brushes. And the most important is to practice.
