What exactly is a black hole and why is there such mystery about it?

One more additional thought, do you think that we are in any danger of a black hole swallowing our galaxy? Thank you for your thoughts!

Stop worrying. The answer is black holes do not swallow. Things need to enter a the area of a black hole to be affected by it. If a black hole were to form next to earth then we would be affected but they do not go looking for things to eat, no.
