Does pipe tobacco go stale or expire?

I'm getting my father-in-law a nice new pipe for Christmas, and my husband and I are trying to each get one part of a gift for each person. So he (my husband) is going to get my f-i-l's favorite brand of tobacco. The question is: since it's cheap he'll want to get a good amount. How long will it stay "good"?
