Why isn't religion just mere superstition?

Because there's a book about it? Thousands of books about alien presence on earth have been written, do we necessarily think it's absolute truth? If I had absolute "faith" that I can't under any circumstances walk under a ladder, even if there are no evidence of anything happening to me if I did, does it make it true that the ladder is bad luck? Is it because of the number of people that believe in it ("so many people can't possibly be wrong!!"? A big number of people staunchly believing in something that has no scientific data or even probability doesn't necessarely make it true or right, otherwise people were right to burn the "Witches of Salem" or even something like the Holocaust is right by the sheer number of people that believed that Jews were the devil.....
