what does X in the coin word Christmas stands for? why not something else?

I just came across a discussion here expressing her/his disagreement on abbreviating Christmas as Xmas. I would like to find out what does "X" means. why choose X and not a sign of a cross to signifying christ. I hope somebody out there can give explaination. I want to know too
