Internet-DSL, dial-up and 911

I have been trying to get DSL where I live for nearly two years now. And I dont think I am any closer now than I was then to getting it. But lately I have really been concerned about a problem or issue with my dial up service and I guess that is because I am a paranoid single mother. With it being Christmas, i worry even more about things like someone trying to break in my house or my house catching on fire or something. I worry about being online and because I still have dial-up service-if I were online and I needed to call 911 for something like that-would I be able to get offline quick enough to do it? I think that phone companies should work harder to provide DSL service to everyone and make it affordable because it just may save someone's life. I have actually fallen asleep and left my computer online or needed to download updates and went about doing other things while it downloaded. Of course all the time tying up my phone line. These phone companies need to get with it and pussyfootin around
