Head Cashier

I used to work for Home Depot in 2000, and was made a head cashier in just 3 months. I loved the people who shopped in the store, because they were all so down to earth and "real." The only problem? The management was rude and impatient! I'm not a "slacker" and am in fact a very hard worker. I grew up on a farm, then spent 7 years in the military. I"m not afraid of a little hard work. I do not appreciate being treated like crap, though. So, unfortuantely, even though I really liked the clientele, I ended up quitting that job because of the management. Anyone else had the problem with Home Depot?

I currently work for Home Depot as a kitchen designer. Since I started working there nearly two years ago, I've gotten married and had a baby. There were absolutely no problems with me taking off two weeks to prepare for my wedding, they were even excited to see the pictures when I got them. But they were in serious denial when I told them that I was pregnant. I actually worked full time up until I started having contractions! They refused to change my schedule to something that was more suitable for my pregnancy because they said "Anyone can have a medical condition, I had to prove it." As if being six months pregnant wasn't enough. I went home early maybe twice and I never missed a day. My store manager wouldn't allow me to take days off for doctor's appointments, even if I was having bloodwork done. When I went on maternity leave, I was told that I would get paid for the entire 12 weeks if it was documented from my doctor that I could be out that long. My HR manager never turned in my claim, so I was out for almost a month before I got a check. When I called to start a claim, they said that I would only get paid for 6 weeks after a two week waiting period. After four weeks, I didn't get another check so I called to check and they said that my claim was closed. So I went from getting paid for 12 weeks down to six which in reality was only four. Since then, I've been screwed by my insurance and they have cut me down from the 2 days a week that I'm available to only working one day. Just before that holidays no less. Needless to say, if I wasn't trying to work a limited schedule, I would definately be looking for another job, but I'm seriously considering transfering to another store to get a fresh start in the company.

I have worked for a Home Depot for about 8 months now, and I like it very well. Im in the flooring department. I am fortunate that the store that I work for has very good management as of about the last year. They are fair, professional, but fun at the same time. I guess, unfortuantely, it just depends on the store that you are at...

I find the management at the store I work at to be very lax and lazy, I have exactly the opposite problem... I walked out on the job a few weeks ago because I was tired of picking up slack for people who were getting paid so much more than me...

I honestly have never had any experience with Home Depot because I have never worked or shopped there, but I think if you were treated poorly at that job you should quit, so you made a good decision. It's not fair to you to come home feeling like crap every day, you know?

I have had that problem with certain managers. Unfortunately, you will get terrible management at any place of business. At this time, I am lucky to have a Management Staff that cares, They will get in there and work with you(not just point and tell you to do something), Strive to help you with your career choices and so forth. It seems to me if you made Head Cashier in 3 months, they must have saw the potential anf the hard work you were doing. It just seems you had junk for management. If you enjoyed working there, if there is another store nearby, you may consider talking to a head cashier at that store to see how the management is. If it sounds appealing, try again. Good Luck.

I am currently still employed at Home Depot. I have been there for almost four years, and YES, there are a lot of problems with the management of the stores. With the recent departure of Bob Nardelli, those of us that have been there for a while hope that the new CEO will remember that it is the people on the floor that keep the people coming in the door. I do not plan on being there for much longer. This was a part time job while I was going to college. I too was a cashier, then a Head Cashier. I had enough of the "blame game" as a Head Cashier so after almost 2 years of being one, I stepped down. I now work only as a cashier or returns cashier, and share my knowledge with those who ask, but I do none of the managerial things that I'd been doing for so long.
