left or right hand drive?

I am fascinated as to how differrnt countries have different systems and why...in Britatin and many commonwealth countries, you drive on the left of the road, other places u drive on the right..why????

I think that driving on the left only remains in U.K., Australia and some commonwealth countries that are islands.
I've never been there, but I think that in Canada you drive on the right of the road.
In Uruguay the change from left side to right side happened after WW II.
