Giving Gifts at Work

What do you do if you been working at a job for about 6 months (2 temp assignments for this employer) and several co-workers give you Christmas gifts? I know the thought counts, but I feel like I should do something more than communicating I am very grateful for the gift. I can't really afford gifts at this time.

This has always been a problem for people in the workplace. I believe that Christmas is too commercialized and that people have become materialistic and have lost interest in the true meaning of Christmas. I feel that I should buy gifts that will mean something to people who mean something to me. I don't believe in buying gifts just for the sake of buying them, or just because it's Christmas. If people at work choose to do this, then I sincerely thank them for the gift, but I do not feel that I owe it to them to run out and buy a gift in return.
