Depends on what your need in an O/S is. If it needs to simple, and basic, user friendly. Windows XP. Although I found Apple's OS equally easy, although I can't remember the version.

Linux. U have control over everything and nearly everything can be customized and virus risk minimum. Most of the servers are on linux hosting. Windows is very much limited for advanced users plus the internet risks. Windows is the most popular operating system because of its very much of user friendliness, but linux is also rapidly gaining popularity.
