What are your views on dowry system?Would you be against it?

In india, dowry is a very big issue.As in, the 'girl's' family have to pay the 'boy's' family a lumpsome amount of money.If not the girl just wouldn't get married at all. What would you do if you were put into such a scenario where in you have to pay to get your daughter married? and when I say 'pay', it could be in terms of approximately $500,000 + or - depending on the 'boy's' status level and education level.

It's one of the biggest social evil and it's not limited to India but also exists in some other countries. I am totally against this and feel should be totally banned.
