Any farmers or smallholders here?

We want to take on a smallholding one day and raise a lot of our own food and fuel. Anyone else here made the move to a smallholding or farm? How was it, are you still enjoying it or is the lifestyle harder than you anticipated?

That is the life style my wife and I aspire to. She grew up on a farm in North Dakota and I grew up with a large garden. We are moving towars purchasing property to start a greenhouse and orchard. The US is loosing almost all of its farming knowledge and ability. It is becoming a lost art with all the technology. The most important part of all this for us is the growiong on NON-GMO foods. I want to grow only heirloom veggies. Threre are A LOT of good things that were areound a hundred years ago. Technology has only gone to remove the nutrition from the fruits and vegetablrs that we buy in the stores.

While farming can be rewarding, it is ALOT of hard work. After 3 years, I am still trying to figure out how to keep cattle from jumping fences, how to keep animals out of the garden, hhow to get that one errant hen to lay her mixed bulls are always coming over to breed with my registered cattle. My herding dog turned up missing some months ago. Someone stole the solar panel to our front automatic gate. There are many things that will occur that you will not even be able to anticipate. Some days I love the farm; some days I think it is my dream turned nightmare! Good luck with whatever you decide.

That does sound like a very likely scenario! I'm under no illusions that the hard days can easily outweight the good ones in the early years, but I'm absolutely determined to have my chance at some point. Thank you for sharing your experiences!
