Discussions in 'Crafts'

There are a number of us interested in crafts, but no discussions in this category as yet. So I thought I would start one! What crafts is next on your list to have a go at? I have bought my husband a pyrography iron for Christmas and must confess I can't wait to have a go with it myself! Anyone else out there want to add crafts to their interests lists? Maybe we can start some really good discussion in this category, sharing waht we are working on and new ideas.

Crafting discussion is a good idea. I love to craft. I am currently making those microwave aromatherapy pads as Christmas gifts. I am also finishing a crochet hat. I am very last minute this year go to get going.

Would you describe the microwave aromatherapy pads for me? How are they made and used? It sounds like a neat idea! Today I am covering the tops of items like apple butter and salsa that I canned this fall. I am using quilt squares of Christmas fabric and ribbon. I just got done crocheting 4 afghans for various family members for gifts. My sister gives me tons of craft materials so I would love any new ideas!

Those heat pads are a good idea for last minute gifts, its a shame they are so hard to get certification for- I'd love to make some to sell but its far too expensive to get the legal paperwork done on them as they are classed as a medical aid. Crochet is good and quick too in many cases, so also a good plan at this time of year :)

I have one of those microwave therapy neck pads, but I've never known exactly what was in it. Could you tell me what herbs are used? I thought about making another one, but I'm not sure what herbs to use and how they need to be prepared so that they don't scorch when put in the microwave so many times.

I like to make salt dough, Its easy and you can make any thing you like. I make wall hanging, plates, baskets, horse shoes, football plaques, when they are baked you dry them and paint them. I dont do so much now as my arthritis cripples my hands at times. I was thinking of selling them on ebay? I could become a millionaresslol.

I used to do a lot of salt dough when I was a kid, its a good fun craft. It seems to be bigger in teh US than it is here in the UK, but you still see some pretty things done in it

We have once or twice fired pottery in a bonfire kiln in the garden, so it can be a very cheap way to do a firing if you are prepared to take the time to build the bonfire properly. Hard to glaze like that but fine for basic stuff.

there are, but not in the interest category 'crafts', it means if you search 'discussions from my interests' those won't come up, but now if people have crafts as an interest this one at least will

Right now I'm honestly so sick of doing crafts for Christmas presents that I don't think I could begin to start something new. Of course, that will wear off in about 2 weeks!..lol...but I haven't considered that. I must say that I don't know what the iron thing is you're talking about, but I'm always up for learning about crafts of all types, and I'd really like to know what it is...I think though, I'd like to make myself a shawl, and I would really love to get started on a quilt I've been planning for quite some time, but I've just got to get a sewing machine that works right first (I'm kinda hoping santa's listening!)...that will probably be what I start as a major thing next.

you will have seen pyrography I'm sure, its also called pokerwork in some areas, you use a heated needle to singe designs into wooden items, when its done well its lovely (course you see some rubbish out there too, but hey!)

that sounds really cool! i'll have to research that...i've done some woodburning, but i always have trouble with maneuvering it around to where i don't burn myself..it's really awkward to use, so i kinda stopped doing it..i'll look into that...thanks a lot!

You can get tools that look a bit like a soldering iron with different tips, you just plug it in and hold it like a pen or brush so its easy to control and you can get very delicate results that way. I can't wait to see him open his gift. We mostly give homemade presents but I reckoned a gift you could play with was a good excuse for a change from tradition

The tinier the better. The bubby there was 1353g so therefore nothing would fit. Dolls clothes didn't allow for easy removal of nappy

How nice, we used to call it woodburning. LOL! I used to quilt, knit and crochet. I also did furnishing refinishing for a while. Time and space are now a problem for me, so all my fill time things are on hold for now. I look forward to being able to begin them all again. I plan on buying and remodeling houses this coming year. I have done this before also and always enjoyed it. I know some might not think of it as crafting, as it is a structure and can be expensive to do. But when one considers everything that has to be done in a whole house remodeling job, it is really several crafts. First you locate a structure which you see potential in, then you arrange and make your purchase. The utilities are a must, power tools, oh boy! Measuring each room, using your imagination to plan changes, drawing up designs...refinishing woodwork. Why do people paint lovely hardwoods? Deciding what colors for the walls, textured or flat? Floor covering or not? For me remodeling houses is craftwork to the 9th degree. And I thoroughly enjoy it!

Thank you for adding this discussion. I have learned a lot just reading. Anyone have an idea for what to do with Christmas cards that have been sent to you? Many are beautiful; I would hate to just throw them away.

You could cut gift tags for next years gifts out of them, or carefully cut out elements from them and use those to embellish home made cards next year

I also like 'crafts'. It's nice you started this. well, Im doing is not all crafts. i do some watercolor and fabric painting. I'm also doing photo-transfering. Transfering photos or names to ceramics or plastic products. Also doing paintings on ceramics. Crocheting, cross-stitching, glass etching. I also have this similar to what you have, I received it as a gift,I haven't try it. I think it's for doing arificial leaves and flowers. it has a handle with hot rod when plugged, that has diff. attachment to shape diff. shapes of artificial flowers and leaves. I love doing all those things but just one at a time. Only I have to manage my time to do all those things.

I like to make beaded Jewelry. Now I just need to find a place to sell it. I have done many kinds of crafts and enjoy them, but have been into jewelry making for the past couple of years. I sold a lot a couple of years ago, but I don't get to sell much anymore. I even designed and made my own boxes for the items I sold.

Crafts! Woo-hoo! While I started out with sewing, I must confess that my biggest love (at least for now) is designing templates and working with 100% wool felt (not the synthetic kind you find in craft stores, but REAL wool felt). I've just designed a set of "Jungle Animals" templates which include, lion, monkey, alligator, exotic bird, and elephant (to be released 01-01-07 from my blog). I also have an on-going template design I am working on, Penny & Paul. The templates are meant to be used for all crafting purposes, but I like mostly to use them for appliques. I link to MANY wonderful crafty sites from my blog. Since we are not supposed to list links at the end of our posts, I will refer you instead to my profile. There I have listed a link to my site. There are some AMAZINGLY talented women out there :-) So much to post about! I think I will have to start my own separate discussion!

Do you make your own felt? I make a lot of hats and things from wool felt which I make myself

To be honest I'm not very good at crafts but I try! I bought a sewing machine last year because I'm a short girl and I always need to get my pants hemmed. Tailors in NYC charged between 15-20 dollars to hem pants, which is LUDICROUS. I paid about twice before going online to look for sewing machines... and bought one NEW from Ebay for 65 dollars! That's like... less than four pant hems at the local tailors. Such a good deal for a big shopper like me. Well once I had the sewing machine, I figured I'd start getting more out of it than just hemming pants.... I've taken to altering all clothes, I think some people call it "deconstructed shirts" and stuff like that. I think they turn out really neat, I've made some for my friends and they love it! I also like making purses and things of the sort. I take old shirts or things that don't fit, but have a good design, and make things such as iPod holders, camera cases, and stuff like that. I'm still learning, but I really love it!

Great discussion starter. I have not been really crafty for awhile, but I am itching to get back to it. I think my next project, which I may do today, is a porch hanging. It is the tin man, from Wizard of Oz, made from recycled materials. I had free instructions from Hobby Lobby, then I saw one made up in a gift store, with some quality changes. I will be seeing family this week, and they will really enjoy it. I am from Kansas, so Wizard of Oz theme is cool for me.

I love just about any kind of crafts, after CHtristmas I will be working on loom knitting and crocheting. I also have to do some sewing,my sister and brother bought me 30 yards of Pittsburgh Steelers material,so I have to get busy. I hurt my back at work and I haven't been able to sew for a while.

I will definitely be sick of it. I got two bolts of fleece one black background and one gold. The third bolt is a cotton fabric.

30 yards? What will you do with that much Steeler material? I grew up in Steeler territory, so I'm a fan, but you guys must be superfans. I sure hope you have fun with it, and aren't sick of seeing it by the time you are done. I will still be crocheting as I have baby stuff to do for a baby shower.
