Seven Wonders: Vote for Taj The biggest global voting is on to select the New Seven Wonders of the World. Will Taj Mahal, the symbol of love, be one of them? All depends on our votes. THERE WAS NEVER a consensus on the Seven Wonders of the World. While the list varied from organization to organization, many of the monumental structures in those lists have vanished over the years. In an effort to build a consensus on the issue and come up with one single list of the Seven Wonders of the World, Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber in 2001 created the New7Wonders Foundation. From an initial list of 77 structures, the N7W panel at the end of 2005 picked up 21 nominees. And no wonder, our favourite Taj Mahal features among them. In this regard, the New7Wonders team recently visited the Taj Mahal. Bernard Weber himself handed over the certificate of Taj’s candidature to Mr. D.K. Burman who accepted it on behalf of Mr.Kokab Hameed, India’s minister of tourism. The final list will be decided based on the votes received for a particular monument. It will be declared on July 7, 2007. The Portuguese event management firm will manage the event and it will be broadcasted all over the world. Fifty per cent of the entire money earned from this campaign will be used up in restoring various monuments worldwide. One such restoration project is the recreation of the Giant Bamiyan Buddha statue in Afghanistan. Taj Mahal’s candidature is strongly relevant in the present context where love and passion is the need of the hour in the entire world. However, whether Taj will really feature in the final list of the ultimate Seven Wonders of the World on July 7 depends on millions of Indians. The fact that Indians love voting through SMS is well established. Many contenders in popular TV shows save their lifelines in the reality contest because of the SMS votes their supporters send in. Now it is to be seen whether the same Indians do their bit for the Taj Mahal. The featuring of Taj Mahal among the Seven Wonders will not only enhance the country’s pride, but will also boost up the tourism of the country.
