For example, there are junior engineer, senior engineer, staff engineer and principle engineer. So the more experienced you are, the higher your ranking and pay. It's also base on supply and demand mechanism. Sometimes, a company might be looking for people to fill up certain position desparately, so they will just hire you although you have less experience in the related field.
