Reasoning or memorising ?

For a child of age below 5 years which is more predominant mode of learning -memorising or reasoning ? This is important for parents like me . Because , if at this stage we act right it will have a tong term positive result in children's learning and educaion . Despite keenly observing I have failed to figure out which mode he resort to more often . I sometimes try to reason to him on his demand ,of course , some phenomena commonly seen such as growing fruit from a flower , burning of a candle-thread etc . I want to know whthter it is proper or improper ? I will be grateful if someone respond thoughtfully that can make a useful discussion for many parents here .Please give the url to relevant sites .
