Why is "Boxing Day" so Named

where does the name Boxing Day come from? because i have never seen any one boxing in this day?

to tell you the truth, i only know this word today when my italian friend which work in London send me email, telling me his schedule for this end of year,...I don'y know what is that boxing day mean,......

as a child i was told that it was the day that the boxs that christmas presents came in were put away, lol but in reality i think it dates to gifts given in small boxes for the feast of st stephen

lol I dunno.. we have Boxing Day and everyone stays home and gets on the booze.. There are no Boxing matches on until afterwards tho...lol
