What is Evil?

I just finished reading Wicked, which brags challenging all our pre-concieved theories on good and evil, and I was wondering what everybody THOUGHT good and evil was, anyway? I mean, to me, evil is doing something that you know is causing other people to suffer, with no real reason, and showing no signs of remorse... What about you?

I think that evil is having the power and ability to do good, but not doing so unless it serves your own interests. Evil is apathy, and lack of empathy, and greed. Evil is taking pleasure in seeing others hurt, or scared, or watching them fail because it makes you feel better about your own failures and insecurities.

So a sort of selfishness? I guess I kind of agree, but I think evil's slightly deeper than that, I think maybe that's how it starts out...? But what about the people that see evil happening, and do nothing to stop it, out of fear...out of selfishness? Does that make them evil?
