What do you do on Boxing Day?

Are you a crazy Boxing Day shop-a-holic? Do you line up at 5am or even earlier to beat everyone else to be first in line to make sure you get the best deal on that toaster you wanted? I have been guilty of doing that in the past (got up at 3am last year to hit the Best Buy Boxing Day sale, was there a 5am and man, I was wrapped around the building!). I used to go blow my cash that I got from Xmas on CDs or whatever I really wanted for Xmas but didn't get. But today I am working (actually writing this discussion from work) and besides that I have no money to spend on frivilous things. I am going on a nice vacation at the end of January and was given a lot of US cash to spend in Florida and on my cruise. What did you do today/are you doing today? Why do you brave the crowds on this day in particular when many places offer boxing "week" specials. Probably because the sooner you do, the better the chance whatever you're looking for is in stock. But, prove me wrong or right!! :)

I don't know what boxing day is? Is it for a special holiday? I know here in the states we have "Black Friday" which is the day after Thanksgiving. Thats when everyone starts their Christmas shopping.

There is a history of boxing day, but essentialy now it's just a day for stores to start their massive "sales" to draw people to their stores. Very similar to Black Friday, except it doesn't follow Christmas (and smarly so).

discountings - discountings
I think that now he comes the time of the exchanges and the discountings. Therefore much thing was in supply in the store and being thus we will go to have great discountings.

There is nothing in the world, no sale or bargain good enough, that would get me to go shopping today. The day after Christmas, to me, is the very worst day of the whole Holiday season. Too many people, long lines, everyone is tired and overworked... I went out on Boxing Day once in my whole life, with my crazy ex-sister-in-law. Maybe the fact that she was an annoying individual contributed to the aggravation, but I vowed then never to do it again, and I haven't!

I'd say your "crazy ex-sister-in-law" probably DID make it worse, but I vowed after last years pushing and shoving match to try my best to avoid going shopping on this day.

LMAO - it's not about boxing, though I can definately see how it could be construed that way from someone in a different country who does not have this holiday. It has more to do with an old, commercial custom and is now just a shopping-extravaganza!

I think the day after christmas is sometimes an even busier shopping day than Black Friday. Unfortunately, since Christmas fell on a Monday, I have to work today and won't be hitting the sales. I already noticed a few notices in my e-mail from various online stores for after-Christmas sales. I might check some places out after work, but not likely.

can someone pleeaaasse explain to me what is this BOXING DAY ? evryone is talking about it and i cant understand what it is all about....

You are supposed to put way the boxes and wrapping that came with Christmas presents. Now people go to the shops, take more boxes from there and start refilling their homes again with packaging. It is really smart. This year I got married and luckily we don't go a bunch on Christmas, so we have one envelope and a wrapper to dispose of. And as we are broke we cant join the hordes of shoppers. It is great.

I have never heard of boxing day! But, if it's the big shopping day after Christmas, I have sometimes shopped, been tempted to shop, but this year, I never gave it a thought until I read your post! Today, the day after CHristmas, I helped my husband move his mother's things into a nursing home residence.

Absolutely nothing. I don't like fighting the crowds out there. It's more trouble than it's worth, I think.

Man i am just too lazy to go out shopping any day. Forget boxing day. Its just too crowded. I just sit and relax at home. Maybe play some games or watch a movie. But never shopping man.

On boxing day we always have our big family gathering as we have a huge family and it leaves christmas day open for immediate family and partners family and suchlike. It has been this way since i was a child and its the only day of the year that i see some members of my famiy so i like it. this year was particularly good as there was none of the usual bulls#$t fights and stuff. All around this year christmas has been great for mo which is good coz it's been a while. Tanika.

Well, I'm not brave enough to try and beat all the boxing day crowds! On Boxing Day I start taking down my decorations and contact all my friends to ask them how their Christmas went... Ocassionally I go to my family in North London, but it depends who's coming to pick my mum up...
