does ZOOs inhibit animal cruelty?

lately ive been hearing about rallies about these. I am just somewhat confused if they really were cruel to the animals.. Yes, they "imprison" the animals for the people to view, but they also make sure the animals get the proper things they need right?

yes i feel that at times the zoo authorities might be cruel to the animals which is not right for the animal

Without zoos, most people probably wouldn't know those animals even existed. It's easier to support causes to save those animals if we have some sort of connection to them.
