Swedes sent a record number of text messages on December 24, Swedish-Finnish telecoms operator Telia Sonera said Wednesday. Some 9.3 million text messages were sent on Christmas Eve in the Nordic country of 9.1 million inhabitants, the operator said. In 2005, Swedes sent 6.2 million text messages on the same day. Despite the competition from text messaging, Swedish postal services reported they had delivered some 42.7 million Christmas cards during the holiday season, slightly down from the 43.6 million cards sent last year. A record 316,000 packages were handled on December 19 - a new daily record. A total 1.3 million packages were delivered over the holiday season to Swedish households.
