Assimilation or Celebration of differences in Imigrants to America?

I have often felt that one of the things that we as Americans get "wrong" as a society is how we look at foreign cultures. Many people often expect people from other cultures to assimilate to American Culture. Isn't American culture nothing but many cultures mixed together anyhow? I think instead, we need to celebrate the differences and not to have them simply melt away as if they didn't exist. I do believe that English should be the one and only language, but what's wrong with requiring our children to learn more than one language? The way the world is becoming closer by the minute, it's important to have that type of education. World travel is more prominent than ever. My final thought is this - one of the saddest things I've ever heard is one of my teacher friends saying that the young hispanic children in her class wanted to take on American names instead of their birth names because they didn't want to feel left out. Your name is your heritage, and we should take pride in our culture. We should never strip away the importance of a child's heritage. What do you think?
