What would the world be like if all oil reserves were exhausted?

hey guys, i was thinkin about the above question whn i recently filled up at the gas station...the rising prices of petrol made me wonder what would happen if the oil reserves of the world were exhausted comlpletly..how would modern industry run? and i'd like ur suggestions on how to alleviate the probelms that may arise when oil is depleted....
