Animal Rights Organizations

I was just wondering what, if any, kinds of animal rights or animal control agencies you have in your area. In other words, if you went out your door right now and overheard or saw your neighbor beating his dog, is there someone you could call. Or if a dog or cat got hit by a car or even if your dog got loose, could you call an animal agency of some kind to help you? I am always watching Animal Cops on tv and I can't help but think if something like that was available in my town, my dog might be alive today. The police in my area wouldn't even call the dog catcher for my dog and he was loose on a very busy highway. But thats a story for another time. There is a dog warden where I live but he has a regular job and is only available at certain times of the day. My county is one of the very few in New York State that does not have a Humane Society. So, what do you have in your area to help the animals?

I am glad that you have some sort of help for the animals where you live. They can't protect themselves so they need people to do it.

but they are not true protectors. i know that they will help alot, but they may not be able to stop a mad man abusing his dog... still, i would rather have them around instead of no one.

i very much hate to see pets, or really any animal, getting hurt. i have a dog myself (shes small, about as big as a rabbit, fully grown!) and i like her very much, however if she ran away no one in my area would most likely catch her. sadly ... my neighbours had a dog who their daughters kept (around 8 years old each) and they let it run around the front yard, i had caught it a few times when it ran away. but, around last year it ran away, up the street, and i went to ask them if it was their dog first. the next moment i was riding up the street and turned right, but didn't find the dog. a few weeks later we heard that it had got run over on a far away road, and it has really turned left. i beleive if you have a pet you should take resposibility of them, and the people who abuse or let them run free should not have them ... but anyone can but a pet easily, so its hard to fix the problem.

Thats part of the problem. Many places don't have any agencies to help with animal rights. There are some cities here in the USA that have cops who protect the animal rights. If you see someone abusing their animal, you can call them and they will arrest them. I just wish more places had programs like that.

i forgot to add, we have RSPCA who will care for animal 'rights'. so if someone if abusing their pet they will come, but they will not search for lots pets or dogs.

My area has nothing to help animals and I would prefer that money go into helping humans. What good is a dog doing me? The don't create a business for people to work or anything else so that money should go towards humans. If somebody wants help for a dog help it yourself not with are tax dollars.

Yes, animals do create a business for people to work. There are veternarians and dog groomers just to name a few. I'm sorry that you feel this way about animals.

I think if someone is beating an animal, we'd call the cop's. I believe we also have animal control for loose animal's but they take the animal to the pound and if they are not claimed, you know what happen's. Unless they are too cute and can be adopted, That is so sad.

animal warden - we have a rural setting and never know when the animal warden will be needed. I tend to the animals I encounter as I see them. Animals are so far not a real priority except for making money in this county in which I live
We do have the humane society in town. They are loaded to the gills with animals. We have a few people around I am sure that tend to animals however they are not organized. Myself, I am able with the acreage I have to take in animals that need tending. We haven't gotten many so far and if they are wild then often my big dogs end up scaring them off unless I am out and about. I belong to a rescue group on line and I could contact them if I experienced a situation that I could not handle. The county is large and the animal control/cop drives around and if sees something or is actually called he makes an appearance.

yes, that sounds good, since it is an actual organisation. i have complted some a 'native arc' cource (for school) what taught me how to care for injured wildlife around my area, so i know have some knowledge of them.

Animal cops is one of my favorite shows. I don't really know if there are problems in my area concerning animal rights but I do know they have an academy here where you train to be an animal cop. We also have a humane society (I live in San Diego) here.

I am a Animal well fare person not a animal rights person I don't believe animals should be abused or harmed that they should be kept in human condictions and treated right .Most animal rights orgazations are actualy against keeping pets of any kind and breeding of any animals .I am for keeping pets and I am for responcible breeding of purebreed animals by deicated people who are ethical do health testing screen the people who buy thier puppies etc.It is wrong to lump all dog breeders up with puppy millers .I also know that respounsible breeders require all pets they sell to be spayed or neutered and some do this before the puppy even leaves thier house.Only show and breeding dogs are placed not altered and those are placed in very highly screened places . Alot of these breeders also do rescue were they take in unwanted ones of the breed they love or at least donate to rescue . In my town my vet does a no kill shelter we also have the human society a few non profit rescues .

Hi there - I live in Ireland and we are not a great country on the European scale in terms of animal rights! If you witnessed animal cruelty you could call the police or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals but it is unlikely that any prosecutions would be resulting. The best you could hope for, realistically, would be for them to have a "word" with the person doing the cruelty. There are numerous organisations, each dealing with different areas of animal cruelty. For example there is Alliance for Animal Rights which is against vivisection or animal experimentation. The societies for the prevention of cruelty I mentioned above deal mainly with cases of neglect or cruelty involving cats and dogs, there are a lot of different organizations even some that are just for cats or horses etc. They should all merge and fight together!

We have so many groups, from peta to the police, here yes even if you call the local police dept, they send someone out asap, it gets crazy even with the media getting involved on abused animals. Guess we are lucky to have such a warm community here in California.

I live in Australia and we have what we call R.S.P.C.A. this is our agency all over Australia and they protect our animals and prosecute people that do the wrong thing by their pets. Also we have dog pounds were if your dog goes out and gets lost that these people pick up the animal and will try and call the owner the first time you will not be charged but if this keeps happening then the owner will be charged. All dogs have to be registered in Australia.

We have the SPCA here and a Humane Scciety here that can take care of any problems involving abuse of animals. I know exactly where they are located in my state and fortunately have not had to call them about any abused pets or animals. I watch Animal Planet as well and watch the Animal cops too. It really bothers me to see neglecting their pets and animals.
