Beedi - Rolling is a major occupation for the women in South Kanara District. This area accounts for a much 50 percent of the total of the beedi production of the Karnataka state over 36 beedi campanies and more than 2500 beedi contractors. The estimates of the number of workers employed vary from about 2,50,000 officially to unafficial estimates of 7,00,000 workers. Children especially the girls, too make a contribution to beedi rolling in may of these households, even though the contractors do not formally employ them. The average monthly earnings of women beedi workers have however gone down in recent years.
