Why is American Football so popular in USA?

I am unable to understand why the USA is interested in playing games that are not too popular in the rest of the world. Out here American Football is the most popular sport followed by basketball, baseball and ice hockey. None of these sports except maybe basketball are played anywhere else. On the other hand soccer and tennis that are so popular worldwide are ignored here. I often wonder why that is the case.

Because football rocks! It's a very exciting sport, unlike baseball which is only exciting part of the time. Football has continuous action and it's a lot of fun to watch. I'm talking NFL football, not football as some people refer to it which is actually soccer.
