No respect for injured/disabled officers....

I was injured while working for Dallas County, Texas Sheriff's office in 1998. I have undergone over 21 surgeries and there are plans to have several more in the near future. Dallas Cty Sheriffs Dept was taking care of all my financial and medical issues until about 2004. They refused to pay me my disability pay and refused to pay some medical procedures that my doctors recommended be done. Dallas Cty has spent an average of $6,000 or more a month on lawyer fees to keep me from getting my work comp check of only $1,500 a month. Every 3 months I had to go to court and a judge would order Dallas Cty to pay me my money. How stupid is that for them to spend more of the tax payers money fighting me instead of just paying me what I am due. According to Texas Workers Comp Commission (TWCC) laws after 401 weeks past the date of injury, the employer does not owe you anything. As of this past April 2006, I hit my 401 weeks. I thought if an officer was hurt in the line of duty they would be taken care of and have the support of their department to get them through it. Boy was I wrong. After all the surgeries and what I have been through, not one time did anyone from Dallas Cty Sheriffs Dept call, come by the hospital, send flowers, a card, or even come by the house to see how I was doing. It is a shame that Dallas Cty Sheriffs Dept does not think more of their officers then that. In this past year, Dallas Cty has denied my medications several times. Each time I had to file paperwork with TWCC to see a work comp doctor. Every time I went to the doctor he agreed with my doctors that the medications were necessary. Oh by the way, Dallas Cty had to pay more for this doctor to see me then my medications cost. Dallas Cty, Texas Sherrifs Dept is terrible when it ocmes to treatment of their injured officers.

I am sorry that you are experiencing this and I applaud your service to your state. Unfortunately, this seems to happen more than most people would think most often to our soldiers. Thank you for sharing your story, maybe one day we can appreciate those who work so hard to keep us safe.
