Pool pump not pumping

My pool pump just "hums". then trips the power. The reason that the pump stopped working in the first place is that I stupidly left the housing cover off after backwashing and it rained really hard. This caused the electrical parts to be flooded. I discovered that the motor has a trip switch that was tripped, and I pressed it to restore the connection. Now, once the water has dried, all that the pump does is "hums". There is a 20 microfarad capacitor, and I am not sure that it has not become faulty as a result of the wetting and tripping already described.
