I'm particularly interested in houses that are designed to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. What did you do, what materials did you choose, was it fun or a real nightmare?

We designed our own home with the plan of building it. We soon found out that it was cheaper to buy one already built. We puchased a home with 8 acres with it. It was a nightmare just finding a contractor that would even look at our plans. We thught we would do most of hte work ourselves but needed some help with some of it. It seems it is harder to build one that is enviromentally friendly. We still need to build a cellar here but it is so much better than . We do live in the country.

Thats amazing that it was cheaper to buy, are you in a particularly cheap housing area then? The house I'm planning is strawbale construction and shouldnt cost more than about £8000 to build (taking inspiration from a well documented one that cost £3000, I've gone for a target sum 2.5 times thairs as I want a couple more rooms)Finding land with building permission is the hardest thing though in Wales
