Did your state pass new laws at the beginning of 2007?

I was not aware of my state passing new laws til I saw this article on CNN.com that some states are raising their minimum wages, which I think is great since the cost of living everywhere seems to be going up. I think all states should raise their wages up to help people survive. What do you think? My state is raising their minimum wage? Here is the link so you can see if anything is changing where you live. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/01/01/new.laws.ap/index.html

I agree that all states should raise the minimum wage, but I don't think it is going to happen anytime soon where I am. The only new law that I am ware of from 2007 in Louisiana is a law that bans smoking in a lot of places. Most places on the list were banned already (mall, library, etc). One of the places is a privately owned car where a child under 12 is transported. You can get fined on this even if the kid isn't in the car. I think that is a bit extreme.

From reading the article only seven states are raising the minimum wage so you are right that it will not happen anytime soon where all the states raise their wages. I wish that smoking was banned everywhere as second hand smoke is just as bad as someone smoking themselves. Here it is banned in buildings that the public uses.

Wow, I'm not a smoker but it's a bit extreme to not allow smoking in a privately owned car. It's good for the children but if I read right parents can be finded -- even if no kids are riding.

I am sorry to hear that and it seems very unfair of them to do that to you and everyone there.

Here are the new laws for New York state that I know of. Several new laws go into effect today in New York. One is an increase in the minimum wage. The new minimum wage is 7 dollars, 15 cents per hour, up from six seventy five. While the increase is good for workers, business owners expect the hike in the pay rate to lead to lost revenues, highter costs for supplies, and ultimately higher prices for consumers. Other new laws across the state include an end to the so-called "marriage penalty" by increasing the standard deduction for married couples filing taxes. A new law requiring insurers to provide more mental health coverage in New York also went into effect at midnight. Although most health insurers already provide care to varying degrees, Timothy's Law requires offering it to workers even in small businesses. The state is to pay the premium increase for companies with 50 or fewer employees.

That is great that your minimum wage went up since I know NY is a very expensive place to live. I should keep up with my state laws more as well. I know the wage went up but not sure how much.

I don't know about our state but locally, in our city, they passed a law to go into effect some time in January for curfew for minors. I can't wait to see how that works! I hope it works out but I have such serious doubts because the kids out there roaming are the ones their parents don't care about anyways. So the parents will be the ones that could care less and not pick the kids up. Although there are fines involved after so many times also. We'll see!

A new curfew law sounds very good but wonder myself it would work or not. Kids here where I live are always out and about no matter what time and they still get away with it.

You would think that they would raise the min wage. Its been a long time coming. Its amazing that people still start work for 5.00 an hour these days and its 2007. I hope this year brings a lot of good fortune to a lot of people. Times are only getting harder and its time that the administration starts to accommidate.

I am amazed too that people can survive on just $5 an hour as that doesn't cover very many expenses. The minimum wage needs to be raised in each state.

I think that it should be federal to hae $7.50 for minimum wage as opposed to the $5.15, if it were there would probably be less people depending on the government. Anyone agree?

in our state we have a new tax cut law, a family of 4 now pays like $12,500 in taxes or something like that, Im not really sure how all of it works, but the news article said it will eliminate the filing of 119,000 tax returns, it says that we will benefit from it, but I don't know.

Thanks for the link to the site. I do not watch much news because I am normally too busy with other things. But you link made me take a moment to view headlines and watch some videos. Even though not listed in the CNN report, the state where I am living, Oklahoma, is actually starting the new year with lower taxes. Which that sounds great because the tax on our house and cars nearly kill us. But we will not be seeing the difference of the lowered tax until later this year. I sure hope it lowers it significately!!!

How i wish that our taxes would be lowered here too as it would be a great help, especially property taxes and school taxes and so forth. That is great that your state is lowering them. It is good that some states are raising the minimum wage and hope others will too at some point.

Here in Montana we passed two I think. One was a minimum wage hike to 6.15/hr plus a provision for an annual increase in the minimum wage (which i think is pretty cool) and the other was a state law prohibiting elected state officials from becoming licensed lobbyists for two years after leaving office.

It is nice to see that some states are taking the minimum wage into their own hands, but the only way you will see it in every state is to have the federal mandate another increase. Unfortunately, our current lawmakers only seem interested in their own pay raises. At the current gas prices, most people cannot even afford to go to work at 5.15 an hour let alone if they have to pay for childcare. Where I live it is 18 miles to town which is where most employment is located, unless you have an economy car that is an hour work to get there and back home. Then with at least an hour of work going to taxes each day, an 8 hour work day gives you 6 hours pay. $30 a day doesnt go far if you have kids and pay daycare.

I'm glad it passed. The cost of living is insane especially here in SoCal... even with the new minimum wage law, those who make only minimum wage will have a very hard time living on it.

Most of them were announced in my area, but mostly just city ordinances, which change often.
