Vlad Tepes was a real man - also known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula. Dracula means 'little dragon', and Vlad Tepes' father was known as The Dragon. He was the prince of Wallachia, and he united Transylvania under Christianity and stood against the Ottomans. He was known for being particularly cruel to his enemies, impaling them on stakes while still alive. Bram Stoker was fascinated with his cruelty, and wrote the novel 'Dracula' as a fantasy account of Vlad Tepes' horrors. It actually wasn't until 1960 that historians made a connection between the fantasy creation Dracula and the dictator Vlad Tepes.
