As a science student once you enrol for undergraduate it becomes a one way highway to postgrad because science jobs are scarce in Africa. You push yourself to MSc and discover that employers in the private sector think you are overqualified and you do not have a choice but to go to PhD. At that point you either have to be a lecturer or a perpetual postdoc until something happens that will change your fortunes. I don't know about other continents but in Africa with science education you condemn yourself to being the last every time. You take long in Varsity, when you finally finish if you are lucky to get a job it pays less and the streetsmart guys who never went to school will be making more than your monthly salary in a week. You often have the barest minimums in everything just enough to survive.
