Kids drinking soda.

At my school there were so many parents complaining about kids drinking soda that they bought at the school that the school turns off all of the pop machines during school hours. This is stupid and I can tell you why. One reason is that the machines are still on when students are entering and leaving the building so they can but it then. Another reason is that the lunch line still has french fries and pizza so the school is no more healthy. A final reason is that once you arre in high school you should be old enough to make decisions for yourself and if you want to drink pop then you should be able to drink it. In a year or two you will be driving and then you can have all the pop you can afford so it is better to learn to make a decision for yourself now instead of not being able to choose things for yourself in the future.

I believe they should just take the machine's out of your school then. My school did the same thing when I was in high school...sold terrible meals, and just turned off the soda machines. They should really just change their whole menu. Schools really need to shape up if they don't want a whole generation of overweight people. It's most likely not the school's decision, however. It is most likely the school board. If you're feeling uneasy about this, you should try to get a group together and approach the board about it. Good luck! And, worst comes to worse...just bring soda with you to school. :P

Keep in mind that most schools that do this also have a salad bar. The kids can CHOOSE to eat healthy or not. They don't have to get soda or pizza or french fries.

It is true that the fries are one of the cheapest things they serve us. Salads are more than double the cost. If the salads were less expensive more people would probably buy them.

I don't think that soda is the sole reason that more kids are overweight. I drank soda at school and I was not overweight. But my mom didn't buy soda for us to drink at home, so maybe that's why. At my kids' school, they took out all of the soda machines and put in juice and powerade instead. My kids don't drink soda all the time but I hardly think one at school a day is going to hurt.

juice and sports drinks like powerade aren;t really any better as they still contain the same amount of sugar

I agree with you. Like you said they are on before and after school, so you should just stock up in the morning! So you have enough to last you until after school

Yes. By high school you should be allowed to drink soda if you want. Though, for elementry school.. I do think it should not be allowed. At that age kids are still having to learn heathy choices. You are right though.

It does seem like another way for the adults to attempt to control/train you with unsuccessful methods. If someone is educated in the positives and negatives of something AND then decide to still do it,then that is a conscious decision and isn't that what schools are suppose to be doing;training you for the future choices?? I agree 100% with your observations.

So it is OK to smoke and then go to the National Health service for free health services because you have trouble breathing and worse? Is it ok to drink these famous coloured fizzy drinks that have the power to remove rust from metal, and contain phosphorus, that cause hyperactivity, lack of concentration and stomach problems. Is it OK to ignore the health advice when you are young, and expect others to fix the problems later? Is it OK to support the International Corporations that are causing some of the worst examples of environmental degradation, pollution and inhumanity around the globe. Before you drink your next bottle of the big "C", visit corporatewatch.org and check out what these companies get up to with your profits.

I agree with you completly. I beleive that kids must be made aware of the harmful effects of these drinks, rather than forcing them to stop it. This will not help anyone. A better awareness will be better.

I wonder why they even have the machines in the school if they turn them off-it seems that it will make the kids want to buy it more. I'm not a fan of pop but I think they should offer better drinks and just haul out the soda machine if people are worried

My daughters school there is no "soda machines" Water is the only drink at school. Our tuck shops have "healthy food" NO fries, or Pizza. It is up to the Parents & P & C Board to make sure the children have access to NON Junk food.

Having soda being sode at school is a privilage not a right. The school can, and should in my opinion, remove all soda from the school any time they want to. It is funny how people don't see the difference between privialges and right. If the school doesn't want to sell it during school hours, guess what... that is the way it is. Is it not fair? Perhaps, guess what, the world isn't fair, you might as well learn it now and not later.

I think that they should have healthy choices for kids that are in grade school. I think that when they get older they should have a choice of a healthy drink, or a sweet drink. I do think that they should work on the food in some of these schools. Feeding children pizza everyday isn't healthy and I think that they should have a healthier diet.

Personally, I don't think schools should even have soda machines. I agree that the food on the school menu is not the healthiest, and I really wish healthier foods were offered. So many children in this country are overweight it has become an epidemic. As parents we need to take more responsibility and encourage our kids to eat healthier.

tough love time!!! They should make you drink all the soda you can then shake you, spin you and swing you around. When you stop feeling ill they can ask if want another soda!! Seriuosly though, that stuff just rots your teeth andmakes you fat, not all on it's own but its a start...

I actually agree to their method of turning it off, because soda is extremely damaging. I was born in what they call the "pepsi generation" and to be honest, it truly ruined a lot for me. First of all, soda ruins your teeth. Second of all, it makes you full because there's so much gas in your stomach. I don't think it's so much about the aspect of being healthy or unhealthy because there's pizza and french fries, but soda itself is destructive. I gained so much weight that it gives you a pot belly just from drinking it, and it has the caffine aspect which makes you addicted. I used to be so addicted to it, that I couldn't eat a meal without it. And till this day, my brother and cousins are still addicted to it, and can't eat a meal without it. They refuse to drink water, and their skin looks dehydrated because the soda has affected them so much. I recommend that they should remove it from every school, because once you get addicted at a young age, you get addicted for life.

i mean, i agree with the students on this...parents shouldn't be complaining. if you raise your child not to drink soda, then they won't buy it at school. i mean, i don't drink soda, but i've used a soda machine in school. the one thing the school can do is offer more options, like putting water and energy drinks in the soda machine. we had a machine in the band room which sold only water and poweraid. it was good for us and i normally used that one. parents should stop complaing about outside forces and just raise your damn kid. if its a health issue, TEACH your child how to be healthy and talk with them and change their lifestyle at home. they're only in school for so long...what 7-8 hours a day...what about the rest of the time....don't blame the school because you don't want to parent.

Well yes, if they are in high school then I agree with you. These kids are old enough to make the decision for themselves, the parents sound like they must just be bored so they are trying to find something to add some drama and entertainment to their lives.

When I was going to high school, there was no problems (and this was back in 1994). I don't see any problems with kids drinking soda. I think it's the parents fault for not education their children on what to drink and what not to drink.

I think that high school students should be able to make their own choice. Like you say it is available before and after school so this plan is not taking the choice away, just making it a little more difficult. Anybody can plan ahead and buy a drink before school for lunch. It may be hot but you still have your drink.

Back in the "old" days when I went to school the only beverage you could get was milk and it was free.
