Do I have to use a food grade plastic if I plate the hole part?

I am working with two different food grade plastics now. We are plating the parts after the part is molded.
If I plate the part. Do I need to use a food grade plastic?
If I can use any kind of plastic under the plating. What is the required thickness of the plating?
