Sculpture of Michaelangelo

The Pietá - Photo of Michaelangelo's statue of the Pietà in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is a considered his best work and it shows Mary seated holding the stretched out of the body of Christ after he was crucified.

Which is your favorite sculpture of Micaelangelo, his statue of David or his statue of the Pietá, Mary holding the body of Christ after his crucification. They are both beyond description in elegance and artistry. I have only seen pictures of his Statue of David, which is at the Acadamie Florence, Italy. But I saw the Pietá when it was on display at the Italian Pavillion at the New York World Fair in 1965. It defies description and the setting in which it was on display was magnificent....there was a lone spotlight on the statue, a dark blue background with small lights representing the firmament. Religious music in the background and you were moved along a treadmill from the entrance to the room to its exit. There were tears in my eyes as I left the enclave. Very inspiring.
