Going to a military academy

So your child wants to go to a military academy? Well, as a former soldier myself, and proud parent of a West Point Cadet, allow me to offer some insight. First, grades and SAT/ACT scores are the key. If you're not a 3.5 GPA or above student and you didn't score well on SAT/ACT, you might want to look elsewhere. At West Point alone, over 10K applications are filed. Only approximately 1400 get in each year. Secondly, get as many nominations that you can. Apply with all your Senators and Congressmen, the US President and Vice President, and if you're a reservist or active duty, your company commander can nominate you (a little known fact and how my son got in). Lastly, make sure you participate! Be a leader on the sports field, in the classroom, in a club, etc. The academies rate athletics and leadership at the top with grades as the top 3 criteria for selection. If you're not already showing signs of leadership and intelligence, they don't want you. Also, make sure you stay in touch with the academy personnel during the process. They WANT to help you get in. Good luck and serve proudly and with Honor!
