What method do you use to Submit Your Site to the Search Engines?

A long time ago I joined Buildreferrals and am still a free member there. They have a search engine submitter where you can list lots of sites and they are automatically submitted to lots of search engines. I wonder how efficient that really is and if there is a better way to place your sites in se. Has anyone tried some method that works?
