The easiest language to learn?

January 4, 2007 3:45am CST
Okay, so I, like many others before me, have decided that the daunting prospect of university applications is looming, just a little too far out of my reach. A friend of my mother's, a careers advisor, told me that anyone with a second or third language has almost double the chance of being accepted to one of 'The' colleges -- Oxford, Cambridge etc... It's not like I don't know another language, but my Greek is really all speaking, and to take an exam, I must write. However, before I settle down to practice, I wanted to ask what other people thought was an easy language to learn -- seeing as I'm going to have to learn to write anyways, there might be something better out there, right?

I have heard that Latin is the easiest language because it is the base for so many of the modern languages. I have heard from immigrants that English is one of the most difficult.

I don't know what your native language is but I presume is english. If so, from the point of view of grammar and phonetics you should try to learn a germanic language. But if you think you have a talent for languages and no problem of understanding other kinds of grammars you should try italian, spanish or french(the hardest of these here).Italian is really easi if you had a latin background, spanish you could learn to speak just by watching south-american soap-operas and get to writing from there. French is a little harder but nothing is impossible.

going with the majority, i'd also say that english is the easiest to read and write. but if you go by the phonetics, i'd say it's quite tough with "do and go" not pronounced in the same manner, some silent alphabets in words etc. For us, being accustomed to it, its ok, but for a new learner it poses a lot of difficulties in the beginning. i am not sure, but have heard that German is spoken as it is written.... any comments?

I think, english language is the easiest one to learn speaking, writing etc. It has less alphabets, one of the advantages.
