From Peyton Place to General Hospital to Young and the Restless.... my mother, sister, cousins and aunts watched these things for years. I tried, but who care if Luke marries Laura or if Dr. Steve survives his car accident to make Chief of Staff? Now I understand they even have one with ghosts and spirits on it - shades of Barnabas Collins! What is the appeal?

Well my late grandmother got me watching. She couldn't read so she said that by watching a soap opera it was like listening to a juicy story and watching it unfold. I decided to watch a few but found them to be a bit ridiculous. I watch General Hospital sometimes but lately it has been boring me. Too much violence and not enough romance or adventure. The soap operas are going downhill and soon they may no longer exist. I think the appeal of the old ones was that bored housewives or those stuck at home could escape their everyday life and be drawn into a fictional world of romance and adventure as well as ghost stories. By the way I too never saw the appeal of Luke and Laura and never found them interesting at all.
