Collecting damage deposit when leaving rental property

It is my understanding that in order to get your damage deposit back the apartment should be left in the same condition as when you first rented it. Look over your rental agreement--does it mention anything in there about the condition of the paint on the walls when you vacate the property. If you have any stains or marks on the wall that are your fault then speak with your landlord and see if you re-paint will he give you back your damage deposit.
