seriously talking i believe that there s no significance AT ALL. but, u know, as player get more n more popular, fan start to worship them, the become hero. their pictures are every where, definetly with their jersey n world will know what number they are. It s all bout 'branding'. Look at Beckham, whose jersey is everywher on earth n people could easily affiliate him with his number 7!!.also sentimental value they have toward the number. i mean, they play hard, n they win n lost with the team, they have nostalgic filing with the number they carry on- u know, among the reasons why Gallas leave chelsea? because morinho want to give his number to sumone else! u see, number could be that significant sumtime

i believe its about making a statement. "im was here, i tag this number".
easier for ppl to remember. easier for fans to affliate themselves to.
i guess there's always 'madness' in games.

ermm, u v got ur point there. But again it doestn just stop there. I mean, the number on ur back doesnt just a 'signboard' telling i m here, or else no player will even dare to leave the club after his number to be given to other player, a new player. To certain extent it s bout dignity. anyway, there s a lot of madness in this game. That makes it more colourful i ges

I don't think there is a significance. They just get to wear whatever number they want. That is how it was on my soccer team.
