It still thrills me when i recall some expressions my parents used while talking to me as a child. Sometimes they actually said out loud to me " Why couldn't U have been a girl?" I come from a family of 10, my parents &7 other brothers. I am the last born. Actually, large families are common in Africa..but it was clear to me &in my family that a girl was preferred. Why? As i grew, I came to believe that children is a gift in marriage, regardless of gender. So, why do parents expect or prefer a particular gender? And for many years, thinking of it, i often said to myself "Fine. I am a boy but whose fault is it?"
