West Nile is normally carried by Mosquito's, and there is no perfect way to protect yourself. The best advice is to stay away from areas where you might get bit, and to wear "OFF" or a product like that which tends to drive away these bugs. They don't all carry it either, it is basically just bad luck if you were ever to catch it, and I would not be too worried about it unless you are getting bit a lot.

You can also get citronella plants to add around your home. I knew a lady who planted them near her doors to keep them out. She had a pool and they often sat outside in the evenings. She put them on the deck tables to help there.

Don't leave standing water anywhere, try to keep your windows closed so infected and none infected bugs don't come in, wear Off for some reason they hate it.

Wear insect repellent and long sleeves and long pants when you are going to be out.
