What is the going rate for babysitting?

This is really a hard one to answer because it depends on the situation. I tried to find an open minded babysitter, one that would agree with arangements such as everytime you babysit I will give you $20 this way when she only babysat for an hour it would make up for the times she babysat for four or five. This worked out really well for us. With sitters that I didn't get often I would make arrangements with them also first I would ask what they charged and then I would say well that sounds fair but I am thinking I would like to pay you according to the job. For example if I were going out after the kids were in bed I would expect to pay less then during the times they would have to take on that chore themselves or if they had to do things such as make dinner I would pay them more that time. I always got a very happy response from this. But in general it is about $5 an hour per child.
