I have used paypal and have given them credit card details. I use my credit cards frequently. I dont find any harm in it. As for as e-gold is concerned, I never used that so I cant say anything about e-gold. I would recommend you to have premier or business account with pay pal to avail more benefits. If you are not having premier, then upgrade. It is free also. They charge some little fee which they return also later in the shape of bonus.
