My oldest got her own laptop last summer and we have wireless in the house, so she has internet in her room or wherever she takes the laptop. She just turned 16 and bought the laptop herself with the understanding that she knew we could check her history on the lap top at any time... we've never caught her doing anything she shouldn't.

I think the age limit depends an several factors. First would be the child's maturity. Second would be the child's ability to operate a computer. But most important, to me, would be parental involvement. My youngest son is seven, and I let him go on the internet, but I strictly supervise his activity. None of my kids can go online without permission -- there's just too much trouble online to allow them to go unsupervised. Not just inappropriate content, but also sites that can load spyware, viruses etc... My oldest son had his own comuter with internet access at 12. it was supposed to be strictly for school. However, he still had to get permission to go online. He abused the priveledge, and so I had to remove the computer from his room. He knew the rules and broke them.
