what is the myth behind the Indian festival Navarathri?Can anyone tell me?

Navratri is one of the most important festivals of india
It consists of 7 days sometimes 8
And each day represents godesses
You fast each day and you pray for each godess and on the last day you break your fast by gathering up children cooking puri and halwa (Indian Sweet) for them! And kneeling in front of god!
