My nephew is 5 and gets sick in long car rides. Any herbal ideas or natural cures without having to go to the doctor?

The short and sweet answer: run the fan and vents (open the windows if you're not using AC), use fresh air rather than recirc (also prevents fogged windows during rainstorms or in the wintertime) and try defizzed ginger ale in addition to the milk bottle. Run the fan and vents. Fresh air eases up feelings of stuffiness. Feeling stuffy will exacerbate any motion sickness symptoms. On the bus or plane you can use the air vents above you (located around the reading lights). If they aren't working on the bus tell the driver to enable them becuase you're feeling a bit queasy. He or she will usually be more than willing to turn them on after explaining it that way. Defizzed ginger ale. Ginger root is the main ingredient in Gravol (motion sickness medication) and also the main flavouring for ginger ale (get the ginger ale that has natural flavoring). Drink a bit before the trip and frequently during the trip. If you are going on the plane drink as much as you can before the flight (100mL per hr of flight up to 2L). You can't take pop on the plane with you any more (unless there's a vending machine, store or restaurant past security that serves ginger ale) so you have to drink it before the flight. If they are skimpy with it on board make it very clear to the stewardess that you're a little bad at reflexes and may miss the airsickness bag (and she'll have a mess to clean up) if you don't get your 'ale. And you want a spoon. Pop is acidic when fizzy and that will worsen any stomach upset you may be experiencing. 7-up or sprite could be substituted and sometimes work but the do NOT have the medicinal ingrediant found in ginger ale with natural flavour.

i suffer from motion sickness, too, but until you started this discussion,i never really took the time to read something about it. i just take bonamine at least an hour and that's it. but my research revealed that motion sickness could be prevented by facing forward and looking out the window, and not only that, ginger roots have been found to be effective in treating motion sickness with lesser side effects.

I m not sure in you r country but here in Australia you can get a product called travelcalm from the pharmacy without seeing a dr , if you can get him to eat ginger /choc coated or other wise the ginger does work reall ywell . but check with your pharmacy as to what is available for one of that age but even ginger biscuits might do the trick for him any way the best of luck to you .
